Water lilies might seem like a typical pond plant, but they are so for a reason. Water lilies are noted for being quite easy to care for and are capable of growing in almost any region. They are available in a variety of colors, which means you can create quite the festive rainbow for your visual enjoyment. Water lilies are secured in pots below the water’s surface, making them anchored plants. If you live in an area that isn’t warm year-round, you will have to bring them in during the colder months to keep them alive; otherwise, water lilies need very little attention.
Planting water lilies in your Long Island landscaping pond isn’t too different from planting a regular plant, except for a few small details. Landscaping pond specialists recommend lining a pot that has no drainage holes with burlap before pouring in heavy garden soil. This will keep the soil in the pot and not floating about in the water. The water lily bulb should be planted upward at a 45 degree angle toward the center of the pot. Once you have properly planted your water lily, use small stones or pea gravel to layer the top of the pot to ensure the soil remains in place.
Now you’re ready to plant your water lilies! Make sure they have at least a foot to a foot-and-a-half of water to cover the pot, but if your pond is deeper than that, use something to prop the plant up higher.
