Gutting your Long Island lawn grub problem

by editor on April 13, 2011

With a reported $ 234 million in damage each year, it’s safe to say that Long Island lawn grubs are a common problem for American Long Island lawns. The most common type is the white grub, burrowed under moist soil where the eggs are laid. Once hatched, the grubs feed upon the roots of grass and other surrounding plants, causing irreparable damage if gone untreated.

Even if you spend a lot of time and money tending to your Long Island lawn, don’t be fooled into thinking you don’t have to worry about a grub infestation. Healthy, moist Long Island lawns are ideal for these pests. Signs that grubs have already begun to set up shop under your Long Island lawn are brown spots and grass that pull away easily from the soil. The eggs hatch in the late summer months, but the damage likely will not appear until the early fall months.

Removal of grubs can be conquered without the aid of a professional, but determining which pesticides to use can be tricky. It is best to contact your Long Island lawn care provider because not only will you have to remove the grubs, but the damage to your Long Island lawn is irreversible and new grass will have to be laid or planted.

The best course of action is a preventative measure. Call your Long Island lawn servicer to set up an appointment for a grub prevention treatment before the grubs not only eat away at your grass, but your finances as well.
