Lawn Care Tip: Grasses Perfect for Shade

by on January 14, 2015

Having a shady landscape can be a blessing during hot, sun-filled days when you want to be outside but need a place to unwind without the unrelenting heat of the sun beating down on you. However, your lawn may think otherwise. Grass needs a certain amount of sunlight to thrive and if it does not receive an adequate quantity, it can appear dull and lifeless. So how do you maintain a beautiful landscape when your grass isn’t getting enough sunlight? Find a lawn replacement that works well within the shade!

You will need to consult your lawn care company to find out what type of shade-loving groundcover is native or able to grow in your region, but one that seems to always be successful is moss. Moss thrives in cooler, shadier areas and is a landscape favorite because it requires almost no upkeep. Having no root system, moss does not need to be fertilized and also produces no weeds. Unlike grass, it can withstand foot traffic and will not appear worn or wilted. Moss comes in several varieties; your lawn care professional will be able to advise you on the best type of moss for your landscape.

A few other groundcovers that thoroughly enjoy the shade are snow-on-the-mountain, lily-of-the-valley and sweet woodruff. Much like moss, they require very little upkeep. You may have to provide a minimal amount of water, but otherwise, fertilization and mowing are definitely a thing of the past when you decide to trade in your regular turf grass for these groundcovers.

As a homeowner, it’s almost guaranteed that weeds are the bane of your existence. So many people spend years and countless dollars trying to get rid of weeds from their landscape, so why in the world would anyone choose to have a weed as their groundcover? Well, because it’s pretty and it requires no effort! Creeping Charlie is a member of the mint family and produces a unique landscape with its tiny, light blue or lilac flowers. Imagine that; a weed that adds beauty to your landscape!

If your lawn needs to be replaced with something a little more shade-suitable, call your lawn care company and find out how some of these options can become a welcomed addition to your landscape this season.
